David,

A few things:

1) You say things like "I ran Sound Card Detection". That is not anything
any of us can "run" since you didn't give either a) the actual program
name or b) where you found it on the RedHat menu. Not enough information.

2) Whenever you see messages about modprobe and block-major, look in
/usr/src/*/Documentation/devices.txt. This will tell you what type of
device is unhappy, which will give you a clue as to what docs to read
(which will invariably end up with you putting something in
/etc/modules.conf which associates a driver with the block-major device).

3) Google searches (http://www.google.com/linux) and reading
http://www.tldp.org are always your *first* choices, before posting. In
particular, you need to have a look at the sound howto at
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Sound-HOWTO/index.html. However, most of these
manual steps are taken care of by the installer or configuration programs
(eg. sndconfig, redhat-config-soundcard). The information will still be
helpful to you, however, for debugging problems. LOTS of reading is
required with Linux!

4) Running an older version (RH8) and doing weird things (non-clean
reinstalls, upgrades, etc) are a sure way to make your situation
completely unique and therefore nobody here will recognize your symptoms.

5) As a courtesy, please trim out the unnecessary original message text
when you're replying, rather than let your e-mailer tack it all on at the
end.
