I remember having an issue like this with 8.0.  The temporary solution
was to disable pcmcia at boot (chkconfig --level 345 pcmcia off) and
start it manually after logging in (service pcmcia start).  Running it
from a terminal, it would still "timeout" now and then... a CTRL-C would
break it and start the service properly.

I don't know what the cause of it was, but it doesn't happen with Red
Hat 9.
