The ptr record would go in the DNS zone file I take it your not running DNS.
Host file should be

127.0.0.1               localhost
192.168.1.1             server1
192.168.1.2             myworkstation
192.168.1.3             myrouter

And the same for the hosts file on the workstation
Then look at your resolve file "/etc/resolve" this holds the domain and
nameserver settings, and the /etc/host.conf should be:
order hosts, bind

Give that a try

Interesting. I wonder why this server requires it whereas my workstation 
does not.

Can you show me an example of what you mean that I should add in my 
/etc/hosts file? I've added stuff before to the hosts file, just not a PTR 
record.
