 Are you telling us that your rpmdb did not contain any kernel entry 
after your upgrade to 2.4.20-18.9? That's more surprising to me than 
the fact that you can't remove the only kernel reference from the 
rpmdb.

 You could remove the kernel by ignoring the dependencies and 
afterwards add it using --justdb, so the kernel rpm will be gone, but 
you do have a reference to it in the rmpdb.
