Myself and root are the only X users I normally use. I just tried to start X on my wife's account and it started fine.
Instead of trying to figure out where the problem lies, I've blown away all the .X<blah> files and directories and the .G<blah>, .KDE<blah> etc. files. Started X again and all was good.
