250-AUTH LOGIN PLAIN

This would also seem to indicate that I should be able to use PLAIN
authentication to tell sendmail that I'm an OK person.

Yes. On every system I've ever used, that is good enough indication that the Sendmail SMTP AUTH functionality is now activated. Now we want to check your mail client configuration, forward and reverse DNS, other spam-control checks in sendmail (are you using FEATURE(`delay_checks')?), etc.

Within the superior "Transport" config menu, I have my choice of
connections / ports: Regular; Secure to regular port (STARTTLS); and
Secure to dedicated port (TLS).

Select regular for now.

Same configuration of the same install of The Bat! on the same
notebook computer. When sitting at my home, it works. When sitting at
my client this afternoon, it would not.

Point taken; as I said, lots of other things could be broken.

If this server is accessible from the Internet, you may want to set up accounts for a few other people and have them attempt to send through your server using other mail clients like Eudora or LookOut. Check the logs for the reasons why the email was denied, and check the error messages they get back. Then come back to us with more info and we'll get the problem resolved.

Cheers,
