make oldconfig will give you a .config file in your /usr/src/target-XXX directory, so that you have a basis to work from is you're not used to kernel recompiling.
I strongly recommend installing a new kernel, as opposed to upgrading. If you upgrade that is it, you'll have that one new kernel upon reboot.
