Well, I just tackled the install and got to the very end when it asked me for boot
instructions.. Told it to use the master boot record and gave it a password and it
told me that an error occurred during creation of the boot record or something (but it
didn't tell me what error)...... I have no idea how to troubleshoot at this point. I
got through the x-windows display just fine. I re-booted into Linux using rescue, but
not sure how to proceed to figure out what went wrong.
I have a virgin (brand new) 2.5 gig hard drive as first of two drives. During the
partition step, I specified only the first of two IDE drives usable. (second drive has
my old Win95 stuff)
I created a / boot partition first at 85 mb
Created a swap drive 32 mb = ram size
Created a /usr partition of 800 mb size
Created a /home partition of 500 mb size
Created a /usr/local partition of 200 mb size
Created a /usr/src partition of 500 mb size
Created a /tmp partition of 100 mb size
Created a DOS/>32m partition for more win95 stuff
Straightforward system, 486 with 32 Mb ram, CD-ROM, no networking (for now)
Would be happy to read a Faq or HOWTO, but I could not find one... What are the
diagnostics? How do I run lilo to check boot/partition info at this point..? What
are possible reasons that creation of a boot record would fail? I know about the
<512mb rule for boot record and made sure I created that first so it would be one of
the first on the list...
A bit frustrated in philly.. Thanks
Mike
