is it a pcmcia card? (fits into a slot on the side of the laptop?)

There is a good chance if the card is a recent one, that it is an atmel
chipset. You should enable pcmcia and loadable modules in your kernel
and recompile (how to at http://www.tldp.org). Greg Bell made a posting
on this site 9th July about recompile.

Down load the driver and install from http://www.sourceforge.net,
atmelwlandriver project. Follow the instructions in the FAQ and README.
You will not need all drivers, but if it si a ocmcia card, you will
possibly need the pcmf502rd driver.

Search the sourceforge mailing list for details of your config.
