Many thanks for all the answers; it turns out that the best source of
starting points/information, is the GnuCash project's webpage
<http://gnucash.ml.org/>; under the links area, you'll find direction to
most of the existing financial/checkbook software for UNIX systems.
Particularly of interest is CBBrowne's "Finances, Linus, and Stuff" page
<http://www.hex.net/~cbbrowne/finances.html>, which has a very
comprehensive list of packages.
