at the grub> enter kernel / <TAB>; this should give you a chioce of
available kernels to boot.

Then repeat the command with the correct kernel after /

then at the grub > boot <enter>

This should boot you so that you can try to edit the grub file.

(I assume that you are using grub rather than lilo)
