After it boots with the startup disk, are you giving the proper partition to 
boot to in the command line?  fdisk /mbr doesn't remove partitions - it only 
overwrites the master boot record, shouldn't effect the disk itself in any 
way.  But you will need to know which partition is the boot partition in order 
to boot it with the startup disk.  Possibly /dev/hda1?
