i long ago gave up trying to keep with the various ways to activate
and de-activate services:

  ntsysv
  tksysv
  serviceconf
  redhat-config-services

(am i forgetting any? :-)

so i figured out chkconfig, and have used it exclusively ever since.
simple, CLI. works every time.
