I would actually find a virus scanner to install onto the Linux box itself,
and schedule it to either run every so often on the directory (or
directories) that FTP would be dealing with.  I'm not sure having a virus
scanner logging into the FTP site would be very practical.

Just a though.

Some names to through out at you for Linux-based Virus Scanners are: Sophos
(I use this), McAfee, F-Prot... those are what I can think of at the moment.
