I know this is not much, but I have noticed that messages are not logged to /var/log/messages in chronological order during system startup. It is possible, depending on your system configuration and the number of messages generated during system startup, that some of your messages are being rolled over into /var/log/messages.1 or similar. Also if you have not already tried searching for your messages with grep, then that is worth a shot too.
