Greetings! I'm looking for an inexpensive, reliable serial multi-port
recommendation for use with RH5. The scenario is this: we have a server that
has been converted over from UnixWare to RedHat Linux (upgraded! :-) where the
users were connected via serial lines to a Computone Intelliport II multi-port
serial controller. Under Linux most of the users (~20 and growing) are
connected via ethernet, but there are still 3 printers and a few (~4) users who
are connected via serial. The serial system is alternating between silently
crashing, affecting only the serial users, and panicing, affecting everyone.
:-( I'm hoping to shake the users ASAP but the serial printers will remain (and
we may hang a few more modems off this box) so I need a better serial solution.
(The Computone system has nice hardware, but the drivers were flakey under UW,
and are wildly unstable under Linux. That's my experience only, your milage may
vary. I've stuck with Computone at several sites to this point but it's time to
jump ship).
I see a number of serial solutions for Linux but have experience with none of
the other vendors. I need an economical (this is a non-profit client),
moderate-performance 8-port device that will support light users and printers
up to 38.4kbps and perhaps in due course a modem or two at 57.6 or 115.2kbps
(when the serial users are gone). The system is a P150 PCI/ISA (located in
Canada if it matters; any resellers nearby want to save my sanity? :-). Any
comments appreciated.
