Christofer, I encountered a similar situation when I installed my RH8 system (using an external SCSI HP CD-RW, connected to an HP laptop via an ADAPTEC AHA-1480 SCSI PC card).
Despite my strong efforts, I found no way of getting the OS installer to recognize the combination, so, I invented a work-around, which may be of help to you: I temporarily installed a Windows XP partition (type "vfat") on my hard disk drive (sorry, Linux people, M$ Windows - almost all versions - recognizes this hardware 100%) and loaded the contents of all three Red Hat CD's on that partition as ISO images. Then, during the first steps of the installation process, I redirected "anaconda" to use that partition as the installation media and everything worked flawlessly. Needless to say that, when regularly booting the Red Hat OS, the Adaptec SCSI PC card gets properly recognized and put in use...
