It sounds like you don't have domain.com.au as your local domain for sendmail. Try telling sendmail to masquerade as domain.com.au. Look for the DM section in /etc/sendmail.cf. You really shouldn't alter the cf directly, but you can for testing really quick. Set it to: DMdomain.com.au and restart sendmail. The other issue appears to be maybe an MX or some DNS issue.
