I just want to point out here that it's relatively important to optimise your system before making judgements on it's performance. That's analogous to chucking an engine in a car and driving it without doing a tune-up and timing. I will say, though, that I've not gotten very good performance from RH 9 or RH 8.0 AS A DESKTOP WORKSTATION even with the tweaking and tuning. As a SERVER, that's a different story. I was able to get Evo to open a tad bit quicker with some modifications to hard disk params and disabling some system services and the likes. Now with Mandrake as a workstation, everything I had setup on either RH 9 or RH 8 runs quite a bit faster, but then again, a different distro even though it's based on the RH distro. Same setups, but definitely a speed increase for "resource hungry" applications. Something you might want to try aside from tweaking and tuning your RH system is to change window managers to something that's not quite as "resource hungry" itself - something like WindowMaker or XFCE4 or Fluxbox...that in itself is going to assist in your performance overall. -- Wed Jun 11 08:50:00 EST 2003 08:50:00 up 3 days, 18:41, 3 users, load average: 0.18, 0.30, 0.26 ----------------------------------------------------------------- | __ __ |kuhn media australia | | /-oo /| |'-. |http://kma.0catch.com | | .\__/ || | | |================================| | _ / `._ \|_|_.-' |stephen kuhn | | | / \__.`=._) (_ | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | ----------------------------------------------------------------- linux user #:267497 linux machine #:194239 * MDK 9.1 & RH 7.3 Mandrake Linux Kernel 2.4.21-11mdk Cooker for i586 ----------------------------------------------------------------- * This message was composed on a 100% Microsoft free computer * No woman ever falls in love with a man unless she has a better opinion of him than he deserves. -- Edgar Watson Howe -- redhat-list mailing list unsubscribe mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/redhat-list
