Try something like '/sbin/init 3'. that will take you out of runlevel 5
(X window) to the command line state. I used this when installing the
nvidia drivers. Actually, I had X running; hit 'ctrl-alt-F1'; logged in
as root; then typed 'init 3'; then installed the nvidia drivers.
