You can open Nautilus and in the URL field type:

applications:///

Then create a link to the application - or create a link on the desktop
first, then drag it into the Nautilus window (after typing
"applications:///" in the URL field first)
 

I can create an application icon on the desktop but no way of dragging 
it in the "applications:///" windows.

Any hint???
