I AM A PACK RAT!! Thanks everyone for your responses and help, I hope I can
return the favor at some point. I used Roger's suggestion to do a 'du -xh .
| less', and noticed that I had mostly small files (under 1MB), but that I
had lots and lots of them. I noticed an abnormally large amount of files in
/lib/modules and it dawned on me, "Wow, it's been a while since I've done
any kernel cleaning, how many could I have in there?"

Well as it turns out, I had kernels going back to 2.4.18-3, with a total of
12 kernels in all. I deleted 10 of the 12 and now I'm back down to a happy
27% on /.

Thanks again!

I take it that your home directory and other sub directories are on their
own file system? You might not have accidentally created only one partition
and then have your home directories be a part of that?
