Your accounts are stored in LDAP. If your system is using ldap it will search the ldaptree for an entry for the given username and match your password with the password of this entry. If any of these steps fails the system may try a different way to authenticate the user. This can be specified in /etc/pam.d/system-auth or via authconfig.
