Good point. As I expect it to fail, I expected the test to answer the question rather quickly :)
If you need an initrd to boot your system, I'd expect that you'd have to rebuild it any time the kernel version changed. Furthermore, I'd make a habit of rebuilding it every time you recompile the kernel core, even if the version doesn't change.
