It seems that some folks do not read the whole message. the samba server has been configured to use a win2k as password server and it is ok for people to access Linux files within win environment.

Not hundreds of computers. Also you wouldn't have to ask the users for their passwords, thay can be set to explicit values on the Linux side. this however, creates other detrimental issues. Remeber the Samba share passwords don't have to be the same as their Windows passwords. Which raises the specter of the "multiple logons" issue. Since clear text passwords are always vulnerable have you considered adding an LDAP authentication facility to your network?
