If you are looking for a "dns for dummies" as you say, I'd suggest that you use a free dns service until you learn BIND, djbdns, or one of the other available dns servers.
Free services are at: www.everydns.net www.granitecanyon.com. They have web interfaces and will allow you to run your website from home without knowing all the details of dns. Then take some time to load up dns on your box and get it right (run bind chrooted, etc.). You can continue to use the free services as secondary dns servers for redundancy. On Sendmail, I also recommend the O'Reily bat book, but I second Al's comment about searching for alternative MTAs. If you are unfamiliar with sendmail configuration, please be careful to check your server after any change to make sure it does not relay. There is a good test at: telnet://relay-test.mail-abuse.org (see http://mail-abuse.org/tsi/ar-test.html) for details. Another option along the "sendmail for dummies" path would be to set up email forwading from your registrar if they support it (or transfer your domain to one of the registrars that does email forwarding). That will get your site moved to your home computer faster and allow you time to learn the specifics of sendmail and dns before you open your box up to the world. mjb On Sat, 2003-03-29 at 19:37, Thomas E.
