Thanks for the reply. I tried to install the mysql-devel..., mysql-server... and mysql-3.23... but the system reported that they were already installed. However, the rpm -qi only reports that the mysql...src.. is installed.
The mysql server does NOT show up with a 'ps -e' command, so it is NOT running.
