Sounds like your machine is doing a sleep mode thing and re-awakening? And it is getting all foobard with the hardware devices. Maybe disable gpm with:
service gpm stop chkconfig --del gpm
Also, try disabling the apmd and see if that helps.
I'm not suggesting these things as a permanent fix if you want/need them, I'm just suggesting that temporarily try these measures to see if it helps isolate the problem...
