Many people have recommended Debian to me, and I might go with that on my next laptop. Though I also hear it's not for the faint of heart.
Behind RedHat, I would say Mandrake or SuSE.

Knoppix Linux must be a contender ,also must be the easiest Debian based system to install
You run up the cd to see if you like it and then install it to the h/drive..
Libranet Linux is also Deb based and is very easy to install....
