sounds like a more serious problem..hmm.. You also cannot login as root? does it say "Login Incorrect" or does it give some other message? can you type the password on the "username" prompt so you can see that all the characters come through as you type?(then backspace them out). is it a fresh install or upgrade? did anything unusual happen to the system recently otherwise(crash, etc)?
