Pardon me for butting in here....but this is one of the reasons why I recommend the use of a good front-end to iptables. The syntax can be a bit much to learn/understand especially when you don't use it that often. Besides, if you are going to use iptables you may as well build up some decent firewall rules/policies as well to give yourself the protection that iptables was designed to provide. I'll only suggest using shorewall, http://www.shorewall.net, as this is my personal favorite. Easy to understand, good documentation, good examples, great help from their mailing list. One reason I like shorewall is that while it makes iptables easy it doesn't hide everything from you such that you can't learn what you've accomplished.
