Does anyone have an opinion on the best way to be notified if a hard drive on a remote linux server dies? I have done considerable freshmeat/sourceforge searching and it looks like there are plenty of what's up gold like products and heat sensors, but I am not seeing much for hard drive monitoring or raid monitoring.

you could use netsaint/nagios to watch all your remote servers performance. you might want to check it out:
