I'm not sure what you mean by "should not be any higher than 50MB"  Are
you saying that all the processes running on your system consume a total
of less than 50MB?  If you are running an X server that alone takes about
110MB.

What does "top" show?  You can sort by memory usage with M while running
top.

And what problem do you think you have?
