I'm not running NIS, but I've just had a update from 2.2.1a-4 to 2.2.7-2.7.2
It broke my domain logins giving these errors in the log file: [2003/03/18 14:49:40, 0] lib/util_str.c:string_sub(1217) ERROR: string overflow by 1 in string_sub(%u, 7) and deleted the findsmb utility. The workround is to change all the %u occurrences in the smb.conf file to %U. Haven't tried a password change yet.
