your problem, most probably must be with the MBR.
There could be two options, one to re-install and the other without 
reinstalling.

Option Reinstall:
Reinstall the system and define GRUB/LILO to be installed on the MBR instead of 
the boot partition. But still create the /boot partition.

Option NoReinstall:
Boot from the linux cd.
on the prompt type: 
# linux rescue
# chroot /mnt/sysimage
# /sbin/grub-install /dev/hdx 
where x stands for a,b,c,d depending upon your ide disk(if yes) to be 
master/slave,primary/secondary..
