I suggested that a SCSI device controller would be appropriate,
rather than the RAID controller he's trying to use.

RAID controllers are usually SCSI, true, but their function is to
control RAID devices, be they disk or tape.

But this insignificent detail shouldn't matter to a very determined
person, I suppose.
