I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop. Doesn't support APM, uses the new
ACPI power management.

I got brave and downloaded the acpi patch for my kernel (2.4.18-14) and
followed the instructions to patch the kernel, then make menuconfig,
then make dep. (I think those are the steps I followed... it's been a
couple of days.) Anyway, everything seemed to work. When I ran make
menuconfig, I deselected APM and selected ACPI, and everything ran
without error.

If I now run the KDE control center, and look at the kernel
configuration section, I can see that acpi support is enabled and
selected. HOWEVER, there is no /proc/acpi, and I can't figure out what
else I need to do to enable this support. Is there another step? I
have scoured Google looking for answers, but there's just not much out
there on acpi support yet. All I really want is a battery monitor... if
I can get that much working I'll be happy.

Thanks in advance!
Bill Johnson
