FYI... http://www.europe.redhat.com/documentation/mini-HOWTO/Partition/partition-4.php3#SWAPSIZE
"Currently, the maximum size of a swap partition is architecture-dependent. For i386 and PowerPC, it is approximately 2Gb." We were testing on a 4X Zeon... On our system we were able to observe 4GB of swap... 2GB original swap, 1GB swapfile and another 1GB swapfile. > 1. What is the amount of swap that should be > configured? Should the first swap partition be forced to be > primary partition? IMHO: Yes. Avoid swap files. Swap partitions are far more efficient. > 4. What version of RH 7.X is Advanced Server 2.1 > based on? FYI: RH AS 2.1 uses kernel 2.4.18-3smp (Red Hat 7.3 2.96-110) My recommendation is establish a set of baseline measurements with your application. Avoid using SWAP. The SMP kernel will support up to 4GB of memory. However the enterprise kernel supports up to 64GB of memory through PAE. PAE is a little slower than the <4GB address space. However, it is much faster than swap. To sum it up. Keep the app and data running in physical memory. Swap is bad.
