its always the simple things that cause endless headache. In the end the culprit was the connector from the USB board and the PCI bus. The PCI bus was old and the server had been in a dusty environment for several years. Several pins just weren't touching well enough. after a thorough cleaning, all USB modules loaded perfectly. all of your help was instrumental in helping me figure out that it wasn't the OS. thank you.

now if i can just get mozilla 1.2.1 to load.  using the RPM's keeps giving me dependency errors (using both -Uvh and -ivh).  i just did a fresh install of RH8 less than 2 weeks ago and would really like to upgrade one of the main applications i use.  has anyone encountered this problem and successfully updated mozilla?
