That is correct. You only need ntfs if the partition is on a hard drive on your local box since that is where the lowlevel system calls are to manage data on the drive. Via samba or nfs your local box just asks the remote box for a file and the remote box is the one that has to know how to get it off the drive and spit it back out the network to you.
