Is there an easy way to count the number of tar files existing on a tape
with 'mt' or another utility. I have some thing in mind, but I don't like it
(it's fairly time consuming and inefficient).

Also is there an effective way to clear all the files on a tape.

My Situation:
I am writing a set of files to a SCSI multichanger tape drive on a daily
basis. I switch tapes on a weekly basis. Once I cycle through all the tapes
I would like to blank the previously written to tape since most likely the
new archive will over write the BOF marker for the second set which will
confuse who ever is restoring from that if they do so before the entire tape
is rewritten.

Also I would like to track the file number of a particular archive, but I
can not do that without a count (without ensuring that backup program always
runs everyday at the same time and the beginning of the cycle always happens
on a Sunday - which as you can understand is impossible :( ).

Thanks,

Christian
