Look at 'hdparm' and enable dma for the drive:

  Something like: hdparm -d 1 /dev/hdc

Subject: MPlayer!

Dear group,

I don't know if it has happened to somebody this problem I have trying
to play dvd's with mplayer. I installed everything what it is required
for the program to play encrypted dvds, even re-compile the program and
so on. The program plays perfectly video cds, super video cds but when I
want to play a dvd it opens it successfully starts playing no problem
but the reproduction is very sluggish as if the memory was not enough or
something (which i dont think it is the case). I have tried everything
at my knowledge: -recompile the program with the recomended "disable run
time cpudetection" - use more cache, -slow down the speed of the cd rom
with hdparm, but *nothing* seems to work. What could it be?? I have
256 M Ram, Athlon xp 1100 mhz. This is the output of the program when
it is playing the dvd in a "horrible" way:
