  You might try editing the kpanelrc file and removing the reference
to the applet. Look in $HOME/.kde/share/config/kpanelrc. At the top is
the [kpanelButtons] section. You want to edit the Buttons= line. Make
a backup of the file ... in case.
   Restart X and see if that works.
