How many USB ports does your machine have? You may not be accessing the correct one. Try this: Unplug your USB flash reader. Now plug it back in and immediately: tail /var/log/messages You should see some output in there corresponding to your USB flash reader. Look for clues as to which sda it's actually addressing.
