Okay... I just spent two days bringing up an Exchange 5.0 server and
configuring Outlook 97 clients for it. This is the environment which
Outlook 97 (the follow-on product to M$'s Exchange client, not the same
version of Outlook which comes with IE4.0 (Outlook Express))! In this
environment Outlook 97 rocks! I don't see how the features it supports
were even thought of, it's so good! But as a POP3 client it's way too
slow... I used it that way myself for a while and found it so as does
nearly everybody I've talked to about it! But when used with Exchange
Server it kicks butt!
For POP3 mail on Windows 95 or NT, use Outlook Express, Eudora Lite or
Pro, Netscape Mail, Pegasus etc.
I loaded the new Outlook 98 the same day it was released. After three
days it broke as a POP3 client and I removed it. I'd bet it's awesome
with Exchange Server but I can't say. It would not be my choice for a
POP3 client as, just like it's predecessor it's way too slow!
