Without a doubt, the best combination is fetchmail and procmail.  Both
are probably already installed.  fetchmail pulls the mail from your pop
and/or imap servers, and then delivers it locally where procmail
processes it.  procmail can do anything you want to it, including
calling external routines.  There are a ton of procmail recipes out
there for you to start with.
