Hi.

At the moment I'm diving through the depths of the RedHat documentation
and got suck on the part describing the File System Hierarchy Standard
(FHS).

RedHat writes: "Since /usr can be mounted read-only, /usr can be mounted
from the CD-ROM or from another machine via read-only NFS."

Some lines below, they write: "For instance, say you have mounted /usr
via read-only NFS from a host named jake. If there is a package or
program you would like to install, but you are not allowed to write to
jake, you should install it under /usr/local. Later perhaps, if you have
managed to convince the system administrator of jake to install the
program on /usr, you can uninstall it from the /usr/local/ directory."

Ha, how to accomplish this task? I mean,
1. how to mount /usr before anything els is up, and
2. how to place a directory /usr/local if THE WHOLE TREE /usr is mounted
from a nfs-server?
My logic tells me,that it is not possible to mix up locally created
directories with those mounted from network. And, my bash tells the same
:-)

Has anyone any idea how to create such a configuration?

Kind regards,
Arthur Miller
