This should be a FAQ...... There's probably no audio cable connecting the CD-ROM to the sound card, or you have the CD volume down in the mixer settings. P.S. I do not believe you have 823Mb RAM. The smallest memory stick I've seen in 686s is 32Mb. 823Mb is an uneven number - therefore impossible.
