Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone successfully runs Red Hat 8.0 (psyche) with the
NVIDIA Quadro4 700 XGL graphics card ?? I recently installed RedHat 8.0
(kernel release "2.4.18-24.8.0smp", version "#1 SMP Fri Jan 31 06:03:47
EST 2003") on an i686 Dell PC containing this card, and the NVIDIA XGL and
kernel drivers were compiled and installed as well (by a sysadmin). But,
I'm experiencing severe problems with anything X-related (i.e. all the
graphics). For example,

(1) the GNOME and KDE desktops are very slow to open/render...about 5-10x
slower than before [same machine, running RH 7.2 (Enigma)].
(2) simple tasks, such as opening an X windows terminal or application
(such as Mozilla), are very slow, and occasionally crash the system
(3) some openGL-based applications don't work properly (e.g., missing
certain windows, etc.).
(4) simple diagnostic test: dragging an X-window terminal around the
desktop (which is very slow) causes the user "root" and command "X" (in
"top") to use over 70% of the processor...which is clearly wrong.

By way of troubleshooting, I looked at the following 3 system files:

/var/log/XFree86.0.log
/proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
/etc/X11/XF86Config

Only thing I found out was that the driver AGPGAR was "(inactive)", and
there was a corresponding error in the XFree86.0.log file. Adding the line

 Option "NvAgp" "3"

to the XF86Config file helped solve this problem (after a couple reboots),
well -- at least the AGP status and XFree86.0.log files no longer reported
an "inactive" AGP driver connection. However, all X windows related
graphics are still not properly responding.

Please let me know if you've experienced any similar difficulties and
solved them.

Thanks!

Cameron
