Expunge means to remove or expel, usually "obsolete" things.

If you're using POP or IMAP to read email, expunge has a specific
technical meaning: to synchronise the mailbox. When you mark a message
for deletion nothing happens other than a flag. This allows you to
change your mind, correct mistakes, etc. Once the mailbox is expunged,
the message is _actually_ deleted.
